Located some hundreds kilometre east of Bangkok, Koh Si Chang is the most well known and biggest island in Chonburi Province. The island has been in a tourist map since the early 20th century. Covering an area of 18 square kilometers, it is surrounded by small islets; namely Koh Kham Yai, Koh Kham Noi, Koh Prong, Koh Ran Dokmai, Koh Sampan Yeu, Koh Kang Kao, Koh Yai Tao, and Koh Tai Ta Meun.The geography of the island consists mostly of hills and a few small beaches. There is no resource of fresh water on the island. Thus, the locals have water transported by boat from the shore. The highest point of Koh Si Chang is on a hill north of the island, approximately 192 metres above sea level. It undoubtedly offers the best outlook of the island.
The island welcomes more tourists during weekend as passenger boats from Charin pier in Sriracha District disembarks at Tewawong pier (or Tha Lang). From this pier, ones could get to other parts of the island by local taxi.
Despite a large number of tourist arrivals, the main source of income of islanders comes from fishery. Therefore, we can see simple and traditional lifestyles of islanders here. The most important attractions on the islands are old European style buildings that are remnants from the early 20th century when King Rama V took refuge here during summer. Nowadays, there are a few small hotels on the island.
Islands around Koh Si Chang
Koh Kham Yai
About 800 metres northeast of Koh Si Chang is a peaceful island of Koh Kham. It boasts private atmosphere and simple lifestyles of local fisherman. Here you will find peace amidst the blue sea and sandy beach. This is an island with a community of approximately 40 families.
A boat ride from Koh Si Chang can take you to this island in only 30 minutes. You can start from the beach the ferry. Walk on to the east, there is a stony beach or Haad Kruad. From this beach ones can see the three islands named Koh Kham Noi, Koh Prong and Koh Ran Dokmai. You can walk to Ao Sapparod, which is a clean sandy beach suitable for swimming. From the beach, there is a small walking path leading to the viewpoint that offers a panoramic view of sunset. A walking tour around the island takes about 2 – 3 hours.
Koh Kang Kao
Koh Kang Kao is a small island in the southeast of Koh Si Chang. This peaceful and evergreen island is a popular place for snorkeling.
Situated just 2 kilometres from Koh Si Chang, the island has only been known to tourists recently. This small island may not have striking white sand beaches but it is ideal for leisure fishing, camping and snorkeling. There is only one small resort, run by islanders, in the island. To get here, most tourists buy a package tour that includes roundtrip boat transfer, snorkeling tours, meals and accommodations.
